Tragedy on Tirinyi Road: Five Students Dead, Dozens Injured as Reckless Driver’s Joyride Turns to Funeral Pyre

A somber cloud hangs over Iki Iki Secondary School and the entire Budaka district following a horrific road accident that claimed the lives of five students on Tuesday morning. What began as a spirited trip to a sports competition ended in a scene of unimaginable tragedy along Trinity Road, leaving over 40 students nursing injuries and a community demanding justice.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:00 am at Jemi Trading Center. According to harrowing accounts from eyewitnesses, a speeding Toyota Canter, registration number UAP 443Z, was carrying dozens of students from Iki Iki SS to Jemi Seed Secondary School for planned sports games. The driver, later identified as 25-year-old Mutamu Ahamada, lost control of the vehicle while attempting to navigate a sharp corner.

Witnesses reported that the truck’s brakes failed to respond, causing the driver to miss the bend. The vehicle veered off the road before overturning several times, tossing the young students like rag dolls amidst a cloud of dust and twisted metal.

“It was a scene of chaos and screams,” recounted one traumatized trader who rushed to the scene. “The truck was moving at a terrifying speed. He [the driver] tried to take the corner, but it was too late. The truck just went off and rolled.”

Preliminary investigations by the police have painted a damning picture of the driver’s recklessness. ASP Wilfred Kyempasa, the Police Spokesperson for the North Bukedi region, confirmed that the vehicle was in a poor mechanical condition and that the driver had been overspeeding.

In a tragic twist that has sparked outrage, it is alleged that the driver was not on the main road but had used a feeder road to bypass a checkpoint, hoping to join the main road after. This dangerous shortcut is believed to be a direct cause of the accident.

“The driver showed a total disregard for the lives of these young students,” ASP Kyempasa said. “The truck was in a poor mechanical condition and was being driven at excessive speed. We believe he took a feeder road to join the main road, a maneuver that led to this catastrophic loss.”

In a moment of raw fury following the accident, an angry mob of residents and bystanders descended on Mutamu Ahamada, attempting to lynch him. Police officers at the scene were forced to fire teargas to disperse the crowd and rescue the driver. Ahamada, who escaped with his life, is now in police custody facing potential charges of reckless driving and causing death.

The atmosphere at the Mbale Referral Hospital tells a story of deep sorrow. Over 40 injured students are being treated for fractures, deep cuts, and severe trauma. The hallways echo with the wails of parents who rushed to identify their children among the living and the dead.

For many parents, the day was one of unimaginable horror. One of the deceased students has been identified as Babirye Linda, a promising young girl whose life was cut short in the prime of her youth. Her parents, overwhelmed with grief, collapsed at the hospital upon receiving the news.

A fellow student who survived with a broken arm recounted the final, terrifying moments. “We were singing and excited for the games. Everything was normal. Then suddenly we felt the truck swerve. It was going so fast. People started screaming. The next thing I remember, the world was turning upside down, and then everything went dark. I woke up to find my friends lying in the grass, not moving.”

As the sun set on Budaka district, the community was left to bury their dead. ASP Kyempasa extended his condolences to the families, stating that a thorough investigation is underway. For the parents and students of Iki Iki SS, the journey to a sports competition has become a permanent scar, a grim reminder of the cost of reckless driving and the fragility of life on Uganda’s roads.
