Amina Namuddu Ng’ono Mwozezi, the spokesperson for the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), has addressed concerns regarding illegal power connections on shared distribution lines. She emphasized that following the end of the Umeme concession agreement for electricity distribution and supply in the country, the government is set to take over this responsibility starting Saturday, April 1.

 What Will Change?
Ms. Namuddu clarified the key changes under the new arrangement, stating that all individuals who have been illegally tapping into power lines will face stricter enforcement measures due to the high number of offenders.

 Assurance for Legal Consumers
She also reassured all those who have applied for legal power connections but have not yet been served, stating that the government will address their concerns and ensure they receive their electricity supply.

 Background on the Umeme Concession
It should be recalled that the 20year Umeme concession for electricity distribution and supply in Uganda expired on February 28, 2025. However, a transition period was granted until April 1, 2025, when the government and its agency, the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), will officially take over power distribution operations in the country.
