United State bombs Iran nuclear sites and Tehran warns of 'everlasting consequences'

Officially the United States has joined Israel and dropped massive bombs on three major nuclear sites in Iran during the nightnited .

President Donald Trump in his address to the nation earlier today said that the strikes "totally obliterated" Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities, and tells Tehran to "make peace" or face "far greater" attacks in future.

Israel's president Isaac Herzog says that Iran's nuclear programme was hit "substantially" but the full details are still to emerge.

In response, Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, warns of "everlasting consequences" to the "outrageous" strikes.

The UN's nuclear watchdog says no increase in radiation levels has been detected.

One of the main targets in that attack was the Fordo nuclear facility, which lies about 60 miles (96km) south of the capital Tehran.

The underground site was thought to consist of two main tunnels that housed centrifuges used to enrich uranium, as well as a network of smaller tunnels.

It was estimated to be 80-90m (262-295ft) below the surface, meaning it was out of reach of Israel’s limited "bunker buster" munitions - but possibly within reach of a 13,000kg US bomb known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP).

The UK is organizing flights to evacuate British citizens and their dependants from Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy urges Iran to show restraint while Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the US strikes aimed to "alleviate" the "grave threat" Iran's nuclear programme poses.

Arab nations have been quick to respond, here's a breakdown of what they've said:

Oman, which was mediating nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, strongly condemned US strikes on nuclear sites in Iran.

The Gulf sultanate “expresses deep concern, denunciation and condemnation of the escalation resulting from the direct air strikes launched by the United States”.

Saudi Arabia, which has strong security ties with the US and is one of its closest regional allies, said that it condemned “the violation of Iran’s sovereignty and stresses the need for restraint”.

Qatar’s foreign ministry warned that the current “dangerous tensions will lead to disastrous repercussions at the regional and international levels.”

Egypt warned of "the dangers of the region sliding into further chaos and tension."
