As Uganda prepares for next year's general elections, journalists and media practitioners are raising alarm over escalating threats to press freedom and potential human rights violations. The concerns follow disturbing incidents during the recent Kawempe by-elections, where security agencies allegedly harassed and intimidated reporters covering the polls.

 Journalists Sound the Alarm Â
During Parliament commemorating World Press Freedom Day, media professionals highlighted the rapidly deteriorating working environment. "Our operating space continues to shrink as we approach elections," said one journalist, pointing to increased surveillance, arbitrary arrests, and physical attacks against reporters. Many fear a repeat of the 2021 election period, which saw over 50 documented cases of journalist assaults. Â
 Government's Mixed Signals Â
Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua struck a conciliatory tone during the event, assuring journalists of state protection. "The NRM government recognises the media's crucial role in nation-building," Obua stated, urging journalists to utilise existing legal frameworks rather than "lamenting." However, his assurances rang hollow for many attendees, given recent crackdowns. Â
Veteran Journalist Warns of Darker Days Â
Seasoned investigative reporter Solomon Serwanja delivered a sobering assessment during a panel discussion: "The playing field is far from level, and without urgent intervention, we're heading into the most dangerous election cycle for journalists in Uganda's history." He cited weaponised laws like the Computer Misuse Act and persistent impunity for attacks on press personnel as key threats. Â
As political temperatures rise, Uganda's fourth estate is caught between its watchdog role and an increasingly hostile environment. The coming months will test whether the government's assurances translate into meaningful protections or empty rhetoric in the face of escalating election tensions. Â
