PM Nabbanja meet city tycoons

Kampala landlords have today met with the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, to respond to allegations from tenants that they are exploitative and are hiking rents to force business owners out of buildings.

Godfrey Kirumira, Ham Kiggundu, and Tom Kitandwe appeared before the Prime Minister following complaints from tenants. Business owners had petitioned the President, who referred the matter to the Prime Minister to mediate the ongoing dispute between tenants and property owners in Kampala.

Last year, business owners in Kampala petitioned Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, protesting what they described as harassment by wealthy landlords.

Following those complaints, some progress was made. Landlords were reminded to comply with tenancy laws and tax regulations.

However, despite this, tenants returned this week with renewed complaints.

Today, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja held a meeting with landlords, including Godfrey Kirumira, Ham Kiggundu, and Tom Kitandwe.

Ham Kiggundu and Godfrey Kirumira responded to the grievances raised by the tenants.

Tom Kitandwe, who had met with the Prime Minister yesterday, also shared his experience of the alleged mistreatment.

Kitandwe later joined today’s meeting, and together, the landlords told the Prime Minister that some tenants are misleading the public and painting the government in a bad light, appealing for leniency.

The Prime Minister was informed that some self-proclaimed leaders among the tenants are allegedly collecting money from traders but pocketing it instead of delivering it to senior government officials.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is expected to issue directives to landlords shortly.
