Residents from various villages in Mawokota County, Mpigi District, have voiced their frustration over the slow implementation of the government’s rural electrification program. The concerns were raised during a visit by the Presidential Advisor on Industrial Development, Hon. Amelia Kyambadde, who was assessing the progress of government projects in the area.
Hon. Kyambadde assured the residents that their grievances would be included in her report to the President, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to electricity. She acknowledged the challenges faced by rural communities and promised to push for faster implementation of the electrification program.
The rural electrification initiative, which aims to provide electricity to 34 districts and two islands (Koome and Bugala) in Lake Victoria, has received significant funding from international partners. France, through its development agency, has contributed 50 million euros, while the European Union has provided 10 million euros to support the project.
During the signing of the agreement in Mpigi District, representatives from France and the European Union, including Ambassador Xavier Sticker and Ambassador Jan Sadek, reiterated their commitment to supporting Uganda’s development goals.
State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Opolot Okasai, urged Ugandans to be patient, noting that the government is working tirelessly to address the challenges in the energy sector. He emphasized the importance of quality infrastructure to ensure the sustainability of the electrification program.
Local leaders in Mpigi, including Deputy RDC Saad Mwanje and District Chairperson Martin Ssejjemba, expressed their gratitude for the development initiatives. They highlighted the transformative impact of electricity on education, healthcare, and economic activities in the region.
As the government continues to roll out the rural electrification program, residents remain hopeful that their communities will soon benefit from improved access to electricity, paving the way for greater development and improved quality of life.
