Fishing communities living near Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese District are living in fear of eviction by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The concerns were raised during a meeting attended by Senior Presidential Advisor on Rwenzori Affairs, Ms. Christine Muhindo, at Kahendiro Fishing Landing Site on Lake George.
During the meeting, it was revealed that UWA had demarcated its land, leaving the fishing community within the conservation area. This has sparked fears of displacement among residents, who rely on the lake for their livelihoods.
Sengoba Frank, the Vice Chairperson of Muhokya Town Council, called on the government to intervene, emphasizing that the community has been left with no land for settlement. He urged authorities to consider the plight of the fishing communities and provide a lasting solution.
In response, Ms. Christine Muhindo assured the community that their concerns would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for consideration. She commended the UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit for educating fishermen on sustainable fishing practices and lake conservation.
Sergeant Moses Kambeho, Commander of the Fisheries Protection Unit on Lake George, acknowledged the improved discipline among fishermen in adhering to proper fishing methods. He noted that the use of appropriate fishing gear and the catch of mature fish have contributed to the sustainable management of the lake.
