Kyankwanzi Residents Protest Poor Road Conditions, Demand Government Action

Frustrated residents in Kyankwanzi District have raised alarm over the deplorable state of roads, accusing local leaders of failing to address the infrastructure crisis despite receiving government funds. The outcry follows a heated community meeting in Kikonda Town Council, where citizens voiced their grievances over impassable roads and alleged mismanagement of district resources. Â
Locals claim the district’s annual road maintenance budget is insufficient, failing to cover even 50km of road repairs. Â
LC1 Chairperson Asman Kyomugisha confirmed the frustrations, noting that poor roads hinder access to markets, schools, and healthcare. Â
Jesca Akandwanaho, a parliamentary aspirant, criticized incumbent leaders for "prioritizing elections over service delivery." Â
Residents accused officials of neglecting their duties after winning office, leaving critical projects stalled. Â
Area MP Kamusiime Pentangon urged the central government to grant Kyankwanzi greater control over local projects, arguing that bureaucratic delays worsen conditions. Â
The protests reflect growing discontent over Uganda’s local governance, where districts often lack funds to maintain infrastructure. Â
Kyankwanzi’s struggles mirror nationwide challenges, with only 23% of rural roads deemed passable during rains (UNRA 2023 report). Â
