As Uganda commemorated World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, journalists in Masaka used the occasion to demand an end to harassment and better working conditions. The event brought together media professionals, government officials, and legislators to reflect on journalism's critical role in national development. Â
Media practitioners highlighted increasing threats from security agencies while covering sensitive stories. Â
Reports indicate 15 cases of journalist intimidation in the Central Region since January 2024 (HRNJ-Uganda). Â
 Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba (MP, Nyendo-Mukungwe) emphasised journalism's developmental role, stating: "Media isn't just another job - it's the foundation for an informed society." Â
 The legislator urged politicians to avoid actions that undermine press freedoms. Â
Farish Magembe, Masaka Journalists Association chair, cautioned against being used as political tools: "We must resist manipulation that compromises our credibility." Â
 Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa from media regulators advised outlets to establish welfare programs for journalists. Â
