UPDF Soldier Killed in Tragic Accident Involving Ambulance

A Toyota Hiace van and a boda-boda motorcycle collided in Mukono town, resulting in the death of a UPDF soldier and critical injuries to the boda-boda rider.

Mukono, Uganda – A tragic accident occurred in Mukono town today involving a Toyota Hiace van (commonly known as a "Tureela"), registration number UBR 801B, travelling from Jinja to Kampala, and a boda-boda motorcycle, registration number UDN 368R, carrying two passengers. The collision resulted in the death of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier and left the boda-boda rider critically injured.

The deceased has been identified as Private Masembe S. Kabali (Service Number RA/217055), who was a passenger in the Tureela. Witnesses reported that the accident happened when the Tureela, which was transporting a patient to Kampala at high speed, attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with the boda-boda. The impact threw Private Kabali from the van, and he was fatally injured.

It is alleged that the driver of the Tureela did not stop after the accident but fled the scene, leaving the victims behind.

The incident drew a crowd, including military police and residents, who attempted to assist the injured soldier. However, despite their efforts, Private Kabali succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His body was visibly mangled, with blood and internal organs spilt on the road, painting a grim picture of the accident’s severity.

Some witnesses blamed the Tureela driver for reckless driving, while others criticised the narrow and poorly maintained road, which they say contributes to frequent accidents in the area. They called upon the government to widen the road and install speed control measures to enhance safety.

The boda-boda rider, who sustained serious injuries, was rushed to Mulago Hospital for further medical attention and investigation. Mukono Police Station impounded the Tureela as inquiries into the accident continue.
