Context: Following a period of significant environmental degradation due to human activity, local leaders are being equipped to address the challenge.
Â
Leaders in Mukono District, under the framework of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Programme, have begun training local leaders on how to maintain a clean environment. This initiative aims to combat the fear of losing the recently restored environmental order in the region.
A workshop was held in Mukono, attended by leaders from various levels, Environment Officers from sub-counties (Gombolola), technical staff, and others.
Key speakers at the event included:
Betty Nakasi Hope, the District Vice Chairperson (Mukubiriza w’olukiiko), convened the meeting.
Joram Kimera, the District Vice Chairperson (Myuka ssentebe wa district).
Both officials emphasised the importance of the training and urged leaders to sensitise the public. They specifically called upon:
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) leadership.
  District leaders.
Â
Other leaders and government workers who attended the workshop actively participated in the discussions, contributing their ideas on environmental protection.
Joseph Innocent Mutalya, the District Environment Officer for Mukono, provided details on the government's structure for this effort. He stated that the government has established committees from the village level all the way up to the district to lead the fight for environmental protection. He assured that these committees are operational and visible in their work.
"The government has committees it established to protect the environment, starting right from the villages up to the district level at this time, and they are doing the possible [everything they can] that is visible as they do their work."
— Joseph Innocent Mutalya, District Environment Officer
