Police Impound Taxis Over Unpaid Fines in Mpigi Crackdown

A police operation in Mpigi District has led to the impoundment of more than 20 taxis found operating without valid Fines. The crackdown, conducted along the busy Masaka Highway, was supervised by OC Traffic Abel Wabwire and lasted from 3:00 AM until 8:00 AM. Authorities targeted public service vehicles whose operators had failed to regularize their licensing documents.

During the operation, police issued stern warnings to non-compliant taxi operators, directing them to clear all outstanding permit fees before being allowed back on the road. The exercise saw some tense moments as frustrated drivers and conductors engaged in heated exchanges with law enforcement officers. However, some operators welcomed the move, acknowledging the need for proper regulation of the transport sector.

John Bosco Ssebulindye, the NRM Chairperson for Muduuma Sub-County who also operates taxis on various routes, commented on the operation. While recognizing the importance of compliance, he appealed to authorities to consider the economic challenges facing transport operators when enforcing such measures.

SP Abel Wabwire, the Mpigi District traffic police commander, emphasized that similar operations would continue across major highways to ensure all vehicles comply with traffic regulations. He advised all public transport operators to ensure their documents are in order to avoid similar inconveniences.

The impounded vehicles will only be released after their owners provide proof of payment for all required Fines and licenses. This crackdown comes as part of broader efforts to bring order to Uganda's public transport system and improve road safety standards. Authorities have warned that non-compliant operators will face continued enforcement actions until all vehicles meet the required legal standards.
