Kaapa, Wakiso – Wakiso District Chairperson Dr. Matia Lwanga Bwanika has acknowledged growing youth discontent in Kaapa village, Zinga Island (Busiro South Constituency), where residents accuse the government of systemic neglect in addressing critical infrastructure and economic challenges.
During a tense community engagement, youth representatives highlighted the deplorable state of roads as their biggest obstacle to economic progress. "How can we transport our agricultural produce when the roads are impassable?" questioned Robert Ssemakula, a local youth leader. Many revealed they pay heavy taxes on their small businesses, yet see no corresponding government investment in their area.
Dr. Bwanika's Response: "Unfortunate, But We're Working On It"
Facing direct criticism, Dr. Bwanika admitted the district's delayed response but pledged action:
Road Rehabilitation: Prioritising Kaapa's transport network in upcoming projects
Youth Programs: Partnering with Kaapa Youth Development Group on skills training
Tax Relief Advocacy: Engaging Uganda Revenue Authority on fairer SME taxation
"These young people are our future. Their frustration is valid, and we must act now," he stated, though locals remain sceptical after years of unfulfilled promises.
Frustrated by bureaucratic delays, the community has formed the Kaapa Youth Development Group to pursue:
- Collective farming initiatives
- Micro-finance savings pools
- Advocacy campaigns for better services
"If leaders won’t help us, we’ll help ourselves," declared group chairperson Nakato Kirabo.
