Residents and transport operators along the dilapidated Kashagama-Lyantonde road have issued desperate pleas to authorities, describing the route as virtually impassable.
The once-functional road has deteriorated into a maze of potholes and mud pits, severely disrupting transportation and economic activities in the area.
Steven Ssentongo, a Kashagama community leader, revealed locals now pay heavy hidden costs - both in vehicle repairs and extended travel times - despite regular tax payments. Taxi driver Abuduh Akim Katerega testified to losing customers and income due to the road's condition, with passengers opting for longer alternative routes.
Robert Kabiito, chairperson of the local taxi operators' association, emphasised the road's critical role in connecting agricultural communities to markets. Transport operators report spending significant portions of their earnings on constant vehicle repairs, with some abandoning the route altogether.
