Elderly Citizens in Namayumba Appeal for Government Support

Senior citizens in Namayumba Town Council, Wakiso District, call for special consideration in the 2026 general elections due to mobility challenges.

As the country prepares for the 2026 general elections, senior citizens in Namayumba Town Council, Wakiso District, have called for special consideration, citing their inability to actively participate in electoral processes due to mobility challenges.

The elders made their plea during celebrations marking the International Day of Older Persons, an occasion they used to highlight their persistent exclusion from national programs despite being among the most vulnerable groups.

Various leaders attending the event addressed the elders' concerns, offering assurances that their voices would be heard. Kasta Hussein Musoke emphasised the importance of the existing 25,000 shillings monthly Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) but noted the eligibility age of 80 years remains prohibitively high for many.

Paul Nsubuga, the area Member of Parliament, acknowledged that while many elderly constituents struggle daily, they receive little recognition for their lifetime contributions.

District Woman Representative Betty Ethel Naluyima criticised the government's slow progress in implementing policies that adequately support senior citizens, calling for urgent action to improve their welfare.

The commemoration concluded with a symbolic tree-planting ceremony led by Hon. Naluyima, Hon. Nsubuga, Hon. Ronald Ssemaganda, Kasta Hussein Musoke, and other attendees, who collectively planted a memorial tree and contributed to the construction of an elders' shelter.
