104 UPDF Soldiers Honoured in Grand Retirement Ceremony at 1st Infantry Division Kakiri
In a colourful and emotional ceremony today, 104 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers officially retired after over four decades of dedicated service. The event, held at the 1st Infantry Division headquarters in Kakiri, was graced by military officials, a spirited brass band performance, and heartfelt tributes to the veterans’ sacrifices
According to Major Charles Kabona, the Division’s spokesperson, the retiring officers were recognised for their critical role in securing not only Uganda but the broader East African region. Their distinguished careers included combat operations against rebel groups over the past 25 years, most notably the defeat of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

“These men and women have been the backbone of our nation’s security,” Major Kabona said. “Their bravery and commitment ensured peace for Uganda and neighbouring countries.”

Each retiree received a certificate of service and a monetary token of appreciation, which was deposited directly into their account. While they are transitioning out of active duty, Major Kabona emphasised that they will remain part of the UPDF as reservists.

“You are not retiring completely; you are becoming UPDF ambassadors in your communities,” he told the veterans. “Your experience and discipline should continue to inspire others.”Major Charles Kabona

The ceremony also served as a reminder of the UPDF’s enduring values—loyalty, integrity, and service. The retirees were urged to avoid divisive politics and instead promote unity and national development in their post-service lives.

As the UPDF brass band played, the veterans were celebrated not just for their past heroism but also for the lasting impact they would continue to make as civilian leaders.
