Lwengo Leaders Crack Down on Rampant Power Infrastructure Vandalism

Local authorities in Kinoni Town Council, Lwengo District, have launched a vigorous campaign against the escalating theft and destruction of public utilities, particularly electricity infrastructure. During a security meeting convened by Bukoto South MP Dr. Twaha Kagabo, area leaders resolved to strengthen surveillance and enforcement measures to curb the vandalism plaguing the community.

The legislator issued a stern warning to perpetrators, emphasizing that those caught damaging transformers or stealing power cables would face immediate arrest and prosecution. Residents revealed that some former Umeme employees allegedly mastermind the thefts, targeting valuable materials like aluminum and copper for illicit trade.

Community members appealed to Dr. Kagabo to address the prolonged power outages caused by vandalized transformers. In response, the MP pledged to collaborate with UEDCL to expedite replacements while implementing stricter monitoring of scrap metal dealers.

The meeting highlighted Lwengo's broader struggle with urbanization challenges, where inadequate sanitation services and infrastructure vandalism continue to hinder development in fast-growing trading centers. Local councils now face increased pressure to protect critical public assets through community policing initiatives.
