Two Children Killed in Bunyangabu Mudslides, Leaders Call for Urgent Rescue Response

Two children, aged two and five, have lost their lives following devastating mudslides in Masibwe Trading Center, Masibwe Village, Bunyangabu District. The tragedy occurred after heavy rains pounded the area for over two hours yesterday evening, causing widespread destruction in several villages, including Burubma, Buniyiga, and Butyoka.

The deceased have been identified as Mumbere Jonan, aged 5, and Muhindo Joward, aged 2½. Several other residents sustained serious injuries, while many families have been displaced and are now seeking refuge at the sub-county headquarters.

Local leaders have expressed concern over the recurring natural disasters in the district, which have left many residents homeless and vulnerable. They have appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister for immediate assistance to address the overwhelming needs of the affected communities.

Residents described the extensive damage caused by the mudslides, with homes, crops, and properties destroyed. One parent, speaking to Salt TV, expressed fears of a looming hunger crisis, as many families have lost their food supplies and farming land.

This is not the first time the area has been hit by such disasters. In May last year, mudslides in Katebwa Sub-County claimed four lives and destroyed numerous properties. The recurring incidents have raised concerns about the need for long-term solutions to address the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters.

As rescue efforts continue, local leaders and residents are calling for immediate intervention to provide relief to the affected families and prevent further loss of life. The Office of the Prime Minister has been urged to deploy emergency response teams and provide essential supplies, including food, shelter, and medical care.
