Mukono, Uganda – A horrific accident occurred in Wantoni Trading Centre, Mukono Central Division, when a Fuso lorry (UBB 422U) lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles and roadside vendors, killing three people and injuring nine others. The incident happened around 3:30 AM, leaving the area in chaos as emergency responders struggled to assist victims.
The lorry, reportedly overloaded with goods, lost its brakes and veered off the road, crashing into:
Three taxis, Five boda bodas, Multiple roadside food stalls where vendors sell chapati, chips, tea, and other meals
The impact was so severe that some victims were trapped under the wreckage, while others suffered broken limbs and severe head injuries. Police and bystanders worked together to pull survivors from the debris before rushing them to nearby hospitals.
Three people were confirmed dead at the scene, while nine others were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital in critical condition. Medical staff at a nearby clinic said they could only provide first aid before referring the injured to Mulago due to the severity of their wounds.
Frustrated locals accused Mukono Municipal leaders and the Ministry of Works and Transport of failing to provide safe vending spaces.
Others criticized the Kampala-Jinja Highway expansion project, saying delays in completing the road have worsened congestion and accidents.
Shakirah Kulumba, a councilor representing the area, confirmed that authorities are working on a plan to relocate roadside vendors to a safer location. She also appealed to Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, to visit the site and implement immediate safety measures.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, with early reports suggesting brake failure as the main factor.
