NGOs Step Up to Fight for Elderly Rights

The Aged Family Uganda, an NGO that advocates for the rights of the elderly and is led by Nyanzi Fredrick, visited Sperinza Nambooze, a resident of Nabanoba Town Council in Mpigi District.

Nambooze appeared in a viral video on social media, in which her daughter, known as Nalongo, was seen physically assaulting her. Nalongo allegedly attacked her mother for not sharing money received from the elderly fund.

Fredrick stated that his organisation immediately took action after seeing the disturbing video.

Police have launched a manhunt for Nalongo and stated that she will be arrested soon. Yowasi Kyeyune, the chairman of the elderly association, said that mistreatment of the elderly is rampant and urged the government to intervene.

Nambooze shared that she gave birth to thirteen children, but sadly, nine have passed away. Of the four remaining, she says they have all abandoned her. One of them, Dominico Kambe, a taxi driver, even denied being her son after refusing to return money he was keeping for her.

The house where Nambooze lives is in a state of disrepair. She cooks food in the same space where she sleeps, and at times, even getting food is a challenge.
