Minister Mayanja Summons Army Officers Over Eviction of Late Byangire’s Family

Minister Mayanja was shocked by reports of brutality and directed Brig. Gen. Nabasa and his team to vacate the land immediately

The State Minister for Lands, Dr. Sam Mayanja, has summoned army officers, including Brigadier General Peter Nabasa Akankunda, over the illegal eviction of the family of the late Tito Byangire from their 1,235-acre land in Kapapi Sub-County, Hoima District.

The land in question, measuring 9,265 hectares (Block 9, Plot 38) in Kapapi Village, Kapapi Sub-County, has been the centre of a violent dispute since February 2023. The conflict began after Moses Asiimwe, who claimed to be the heir of the late Byangire, allegedly colluded with Brig. Gen. Nabasa and others were to fraudulently acquire the land and forcefully evict the rightful occupants.

During the evictions, Brig. Gen. Nabasa and his group reportedly used excessive force, burning homes and preventing the family from accessing their land. The affected family members petitioned the President’s Office, accusing Nabasa of abusing his military authority and uniform to intimidate them.

The matter was brought before the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Hoima’s Kitoba Sub-County, where Brig. Gen. Nabasa denied allegations of misconduct but admitted to holding a 10-year sub-lease allegedly obtained from Moses Asiimwe.

Minister Mayanja, however, dismissed these claims, insisting that the army officers had no legal right to evict the family. He ordered that 500 acres be immediately returned to the Byangire family, pending further investigations.

Upon visiting Kapapi Primary School, Minister Mayanja was shocked by reports of brutality and directed Brig. Gen. Nabasa and his team to vacate the land immediately, allowing the family to reclaim their property.

Some of Byangire’s family members expressed gratitude to Minister Mayanja and the President’s Office for intervening in a dispute that has lasted three years.

The contested land spans five villages: Waki South, Waki North, Runga, Kapapi Central, and Kiryatete in Kapapi Sub-County.
