Mass National ID Registration Drive Launches in Mukono

Mukono District has kicked off an intensive national ID registration exercise, targeting 7,240 residents in the first phase. The Uganda National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) initiative saw long queues at Kauga village registration center, where locals followed numbered protocols to maintain order.  

Daniel Mutebi, the village registration supervisor, emphasized the need for applicants to present existing IDs for verification while guiding them through the digital and paper-based processes. He noted special accommodations for pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities to ensure inclusive participation.  

Mukono RDC Hajjat Fatumah Ndisaba Nabitaka confirmed deployment of 81 registration kits across high-density areas, with plans to expand to Kimenyedde, Ntunda, Namugaaga, and Koome sub-counties following initial delays. She urged residents to utilize the six-month window for registration, particularly those needing updates or replacements.  

NIRA's Mukono manager Edrine Wesonge clarified documentation requirements, including birth certificates or introduction letters for first-time applicants. The exercise has received bipartisan support, with Mukono Central Division Mayor Robert Peter Kabanda and Deputy District Chairperson Joram Kabali Kimera mobilizing communities to participate.
