Fatal Accident in Lyantonde as Runaway Truck Crushes Pedestrians

Lyantonde, Uganda – A Fuso Boxbody truck (UAY 508R) lost control and rammed into pedestrians in Katovu Town Council, killing two people on the spot and injuring several others in a horrific accident yesterday evening.

Victims Identified: Phoebe Nabaasa (38) - Resident of Katovu Town Council, Alice (Full name withheld) - Resident of Kanyegenyege, Mpummudde Sub-county

Both victims were walking along the roadside when the truck, which had failed to brake properly, veered off and crushed them. Nabaasa died instantly, while Alice was rushed to Lyantonde Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Cause of the Accident: Lt. Richard Asiimwe (Traffic Police) confirmed that a parked trailer (KBJ 134C) had obstructed the road, forcing the Fuso truck to swerve dangerously.
Eyewitnesses blamed poor parking habits by trailer drivers, which often force other vehicles into risky manoeuvres.

Twaha Kasirye (Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson) warned drivers to inspect their vehicles before moving, especially brakes.
Hunt for the truck driver is ongoing after he fled the scene.
Victims’ bodies taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.

Residents in the community expressed outrage over the frequency of reckless parking on highways. They demanded stricter enforcement to address the issue, citing the occurrence of similar accidents due to negligent truck drivers.
