MUKONO, UGANDA – A fire outbreak in Mukono Municipality has destroyed property valued at an estimated 100 million shillings, police have confirmed. The incident occurred on the morning of April 15, 2026, at approximately 7:20 AM in Kiwanga–Lwanda Cell, Goma Division.
According to a statement by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the fire started at the Birimuye Metal Workshop in the welding section before spreading to a neighboring timber workshop located along the busy Kampala–Jinja Highway.
Preliminary eyewitness accounts suggest that the fire may have been sparked by faulty electrical connections.
Police officers from Coca-Cola Police Post, alongside the Mukono Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, responded swiftly to the scene. Their joint efforts successfully contained and extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading further.
The firefighting operation caused temporary traffic disruptions along the Kampala–Jinja Highway for about 30 minutes. Vehicles were diverted to alternative routes, leading to brief congestion. Traffic has since returned to normal.
The timber workshop bore the brunt of the destruction. Items destroyed include carpentry machines, finished timber products, door frames, tables, and other assorted materials. Police have placed the estimated property loss at UGX 100 million.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
Authorities have confirmed that the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Police have urged the public to ensure proper electrical installations and adhere to safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
