President Museveni Appoints Hon. Justice Flavian Zeija as New Chief Justice

Justice Zeija now takes over the helm of Uganda’s judiciary at a time of significant legal and constitutional discourse in the country.

Kampala, Uganda — In a key judicial appointment, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has named Hon. Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Uganda.

The appointment was made under Article 142(1) of the 1995 Constitution, on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission. The President’s Office announced the decision in a press release dated Thursday, 22 January 2026.

Prior to the appointment, the name of Hon. Justice Flavian Zeija was submitted to the Parliament of Uganda for approval, in line with constitutional requirements. Parliament has since granted its approval, clearing the way for Justice Zeija to assume the role.

Justice Zeija now takes over the helm of Uganda’s judiciary at a time of significant legal and constitutional discourse in the country.

The appointment follows standard constitutional procedure and marks a new chapter in the leadership of Uganda’s judicial system.
