Residents in Fear Over Dangling Power Cables and Rotten Electric Poles in Mukono

Panic has gripped residents of Kikooza Village in Mukono Central Division after several electricity poles deteriorated, leaving dangerously hanging power cables that now pose a serious threat to lives and property.

For months, residents have pleaded with the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to fix the problem, but their concerns have gone unanswered. The situation has now become critical after one of the electric poles in the area began to rot and lean dangerously, supported only by the wall of a nearby house.

According to residents led by Mr. Anatoli Kasajja, the problem has been worsened by sagging live wires that hang alarmingly low along roads frequently used by pedestrians, including school children.

The village secretary, Ms. Faith Namatovu, confirmed that several reports have been filed with UEDCL but no action has been taken. She said the situation has instilled fear among residents, many of whom now avoid using certain roads due to the risk of electrocution.

The area councilor, Mr. Ronald Ssenabulya, described the situation as a disaster in waiting and urged the power distributor to act swiftly to avert tragedy.

Pastor George Malinga, another resident, said they decided to involve the media after numerous failed attempts to get help through official channels.

When contacted for a comment, UEDCL spokesperson Mr. Jonah Kizza said the company had not yet received any formal report about the issue but promised immediate action once notified.

Electricity-related challenges, including frequent outages and aging infrastructure, are common in several parts of Mukono District. Many residents say poor maintenance and slow response from service providers have continued to endanger lives.

As the community awaits intervention, residents of Kikooza Village can only hope that help comes before disaster strikes.
