Government launches free meter distribution
The program has already benefited 1,270,000 customers who applied in April
The Ministry of Energy launched a nationwide free meter distribution initiative to simplify the process of new power connections for consumers. The move is part of a government effort to address power vandalism, which Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa believes is often a result of lengthy connection processes.
Nankabirwa made these remarks at the launch of the exercise in Bukomero, Kiboga district. The ministry aims to reach 230,000 customers through this program, in addition to the 110,000 new applicants already in the queue.
The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDCL) has deployed 850 staff for the initiative and plans to increase the number to 1,200 in the near future.
Speaking at the same event, UEDCL Executive Director Paul Mwesigwa explained the power connection process, which includes obtaining an inspection certificate. He added that the program has already benefited 1,270,000 customers who applied in April, helping to reduce the backlog.
Mwesigwa expressed confidence that this effort will lead to 100% electricity access for all Ugandans within the next 30 years.
During the event, a resident named Fredrick Kabuye lodged a complaint about being defrauded by individuals who extorted money from him under the pretense of providing a connection. One of the first beneficiaries, Sebewola George, shared his positive experience with the new project.
