Former Supreme Court Judge George Kanyaihamba Dies At 88

Kanyeihamba rose from humble beginnings to become one of the architects of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution

The country is mourning the death of former Supreme Court Judge and legal scholar Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, who passed away at the age of 88. The renowned jurist died this morning at Nakasero hospital in Kampala after battling illness related to old age, according to close family sources.

Prof. Kanyeihamba was one of Uganda’s most distinguished legal minds, having served in various capacities, including as a Justice of the Supreme Court, Attorney General, and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

He was also a prominent academic, law professor, and author, widely respected for his contribution to constitutional law and human rights both in Uganda and beyond.

Born in 1937 in Fort Portal, Kanyeihamba rose from humble beginnings to become one of the architects of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution. His outspoken nature and fearless defense of the rule of law earned him admiration and criticism in equal measure.

He will be remembered for his principled judgments, especially in high-profile constitutional cases, and for mentoring generations of lawyers and judges.

Preparations for his burial are underway, with the government expected to accord him an official send-off. Several leaders across political and legal circles are sending their condolences, describing him as a “towering pillar of justice and intellect.”
