Fire Guts Mityana's Market Square, Traders Lose Millions

Mityana, Uganda – A fierce overnight fire has reduced Market Square, one of Mityana Municipality's busiest trading hubs, to ashes, leaving over 200 vendors counting colossal losses.

On Tuesday night at 8:00 PM, an outbreak occurred. The first response arrived at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, three hours later. This delay affected over 200 vendors, including dealers in textiles, hardware, poultry, and hoteliers. The estimated loss is hundreds of millions of UGX, resulting in the destruction of goods, stalls, and cash.

"The fire spread rapidly. By the time we mobilized, the entire market was engulfed." Mayor Mukambwe Lukonge

"My entire stock of 50M UGX in fabrics is gone!" – Textile seller
"No fire extinguishers in the market. We watched helplessly." – Hardware vendor

Mityana, a municipality, lacks functional fire trucks, leading to a chaotic situation. Smouldering debris attracted scrap dealers by dawn, further compounding the losses.
