A series of road accidents along the Tirinyi-Mbale Highway on Thursday, May 22, 2025, left several people injured, destroyed vehicles, and raised concerns over road safety in the region. The incidents, occurring in Kibuku and Budaka districts, involved high-profile individuals, including a Member of Parliament, and a hit-and-run case that left a motorcycle passenger in critical condition. Â
The first accident occurred at around 4:30 PM at Kadama Trading Center in Kibuku District, involving three vehicles: Â
- A Land Cruiser (Registration UNB 193V) driven by Hon. Gerald Nangoli, MP for Elgon North County (Bulambuli District), traveling from Tirinyi to Mbale, A Toyota Harrier (UBL 086H),driven by Mafabi Banali, a 47-year-old teacher from Mukono District, moving in the opposite direction, A parked Toyota Noah (UAX 044A) near a gate. Â
According to Wilfred Kyapasa, the Bukedi North Region Police Spokesperson, Hon. Nangoli’s vehicle attempted to overtake a minibus but collided head-on with the oncoming Toyota Harrier. To avoid further impact, the Land Cruiser swerved and rammed into the stationary Toyota Noah, causing it to overturn.Â
Officers led by Stg. Moses Eriebu (No. 27297) documented the scene. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though those involved sustained minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed to Tirinyi Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). Investigations are ongoing. Â
 Earlier the same day, at around 11:00 AM, another serious accident occurred at Naboa along the Mbale-Tirinyi Road in Budaka District. The collision involved, Toyota Carib (UAJ 441A) coming from Mbale, TVS Motorcycle (UFH 630U) ridden by Musa Kasirye, traveling from Budaka with passenger Zula Nabagereka. Â

The Toyota Carib driver allegedly made a sudden left turn into Naboa Union Vision SS without due care, slamming into the motorcycle. The impact left Nabagereka critically injured, and she was rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital. The driver of the Toyota Carib fled the scene, prompting a police manhunt. Â
Officers PC Musobya Paul (No. 60321) and PC Angabiire visited the scene. Both vehicles were towed to Budaka Police Station for inspection. Authorities are investigating the incident and searching for the absconding driver. Â
The Bukedi North Police have expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents on the highwayÂ
"Reckless overtaking, sudden turns without signalling, and speeding are major causes of these crashes. We urge all motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent further tragedies."Â
As investigations continue, authorities are working to ensure road safety measures are strengthened to prevent future incidents. Â
