Bunyoro marathon, Commemorating Omukama Kabalega

Thousands of Bunyoro Residents Participate in Marathon to Commemorate Omukama Kabalega and Develop Hoima City

HOIMA, UGANDA – Residents of Bunyoro have enthusiastically participated in a marathon to commemorate the 102nd anniversary of the works of Omukama Kabalega, celebrated from the date of his passing.


The commemorative run began at the kingdom's palace, with thousands of people turning up to run through the streets of Hoima city. Participants ran distances of 2, 5, and 10 kilometers. The event was attended by government officials, non-governmental organizations, and members of the general public, according to James Kisoro, the event organizer.

Kisoro explained that the goal of remembering this day is to honor the legacy of Omukama Kabalega, who ruled Bunyoro from 1870 to 1899 and is renowned for his strong resistance against colonialists.
Brian Kaboyo, the Mayor of Hoima City, and Moses Atuha, the Clerk to the Kingdom Parliament, stated that organizing this commemoration helps in educating people about the history of Kabalega and promotes development, especially among the youth.
Participants in the marathon praised the initiative, noting that it also helps them keep physically fit.
The annual run to commemorate the Omukama is held under the theme of empowering youth economically.
