DEFORESTATION GETING OUT OF HAND, MPIGI RESIDENTS BLAME IT ON NEMA AND NFA

Residents say, that unless the government removes the NFA body, the forests will become history within no time.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the National Forestry Authority ( NFA) are the government agencies responsible to save the forests, however the local leaders allege that the above government bodies are aiding the destruction of forests.

They made these complaints at a meeting with officials from the Makerere University at the District Headquarters.

Residents say, that unless the government removes the NFA body, the forests will become history within no time.

Councilor Benon Nsamba, along with other leaders, said they have no option since their hands are tied, after being deprived of the ultimate authority over the forests.
Maria Lubega, the RDC for Mpigi, said the NFA in Mpigi has failed to coordinate because even when they are invited to meetings they do not show up.
Dr Ssennyange, an environmental scientist from the University of Makerere, said that by now government agencies also need monitors to avoid doing things in a unaccountable manner.
