Security in kasese has warned people engaging in illegal mining

The security in Kasese has warned all people involved in illegal mining activities and those guarding the mineral mining sites in the district.

This comes after an illegal gold mine quarry collapsed and killed instantly one Joel Mbusa Mukunguli of 21 years old, a resident of Kamughobe II village in kisinga Sub County.

It’s said that Joel with other five teenagers had been working at this site that is said to be in existence for four years until Friday at 9:00am when soil collapsed on them only for the five to survive.

The security and local leaders say they were not aware of these activities taking place at these sites in the district.

Salt TV speaking to the deputy resident district commissioner, Kasese, Mr. Joshua Masereka said that they instructed police and all local leaders in the whole district to immediately report whoever is found engaged in illegal mining.

The deputy RDC warned security personnels, saying whoever will find guarding illegal mining sites will be arrested, adding that they have started investigating the matters.

The mayor Kasese municipality who was the chairperson of local council three kisinga sub county Chance Kahindo, said when the activities of mining commenced intervene immediately and stop them but after two weeks they came with documents allowing them to operate.

He added that when they continued to intervene so much they started receiving calls of threatening them.

Chance added that when they started to see security personnels guarding these mining sites, saying it indicated that these mining sites are legal.

The newly elected local council three, Kisinga sub county Mukeri Julius called on the ministry of minerals to intervene immediately and verify the companies carrying out mining in the district to reduce on the similar incidents.

The regional police spokesperson, Rwenzori East, ASP Tumushime Nelson said the body of one Joel Mbusa Mukunguli has been retrieved.

He added that the mining site is currently treated as a scene of crime as the investigation continues.
