UMEME staff amputated over night operation in Sironko

Mbale UMEME staff was amputated in Sironko during an operation on illegal connections.

There was shock in  zesui village  , Masaba sub county  in Sironko district  when unidenfidted  umeme  officials came at around 2pm and started   forcing residents to up there houses , in the process  a one Aliko steven  who was one of the umeme officials  lost his arm .

According to  Micheal  Gidudu who chopped  off the umeme official hand  narrated  that  he thought  thieves had attacked him  because they did not  come with the lcl or the oc of the village police station  .

He added on that  he was beaten badly after forcing him out of the house with 7 guns and later took his money worthy 800k .

Other residents in the area told us that  some of them had to come out naked  because the umeme officials were very tough .

Masaba Sam  one of the residents  said that the high cost of getting connected  to the power gride is very high and that being a rural area  it makes it had for locals to pay up 2m needed .

While  mr  Manasolo  James  told us that he paid to get power in 2016 but up to date the umeme officials have never connected him , but keep coming to his house asking for money he showed us the paper work  he used to process the power since 2016 .

 Laban Wanyala the LCIII chairperson of Masaba Sub County has urged people from his area to stop illegal connections which may result to the death.

He also blamed UMEME for conducting such illegal operations in his area urging them to always inform local leaders and police to prevent such future chaos.and that over 50 people in area have applied for power but never connected .

Muhangi also blamed UMEME people for going in an operation at night time without informing local leaders or police and extorting money from locals who were discovered connecting power illegally which prompted the community to respond negatively towards them.

The DPC adds that the injured staff is currently receiving treatment at Mbale regional referral hospital in critical condition
