Natural resources committee in western Uganda summons ministry of lands over 568 Masaka land titles
The Natural resources committee of parliament has summoned officials from the ministry of lands over confiscation of 568 Land titles belonging to residents in Masaka.
The titles were handed over by UEDCL to ministry of lands in 2018 for transfer of Easements but to date, the titles have never been returned to the locals.
The Natural resources committee of parliament led by kefa Kiwanuka on a fact finding mission to ascertain the progress of 220KV power plant financed by world bank loan to Uganda Electricity transmission limited in western Uganda.
During their spot check, members unearthed the rot that came with the compensation of residents in the project affected Areas.
These followed reports from the Area representatives who claim locals who submitted their land titles for verification to UEDCL have never received them back.
The Committee members also discovered that though the residents were supposed to be the first beneficiaries in this project by receiving power at a subsidized cost, the charges slapped on them are extremely high compared to the power exported to Tanzania.
The Committee has also visited Mbarara power plant and Mirama hills in Ntungamo district, which will distribute power to neighboring Rwanda and by the end of December after the completion of Karuma Dam; Uganda will have the capacity to produce 600MW.
