LDU Shot Over Theft in Kasese

A Local Defence Unit(LDU) was yesterday confirmed to have been shot dead by police when he was suspected by locals to be a thief.

The incident happened in Nyakakindo village, Hiima town council in Kasese district in the afternoon of yesterday.

The Public relations officer of the Army in Kavela barracks speaking to us on phone, confirmed that one of their own, identified as Charles Olwenyi was on training in Karungibati before he escaped from the main body (fellows) with a gun and a civilian suspected him to be a thief then immediately alerted the police who swing in and shot him but died on his way to the hospital.

His body is currently at second division headquarters in the hospital.

It is believed that before the civilians suspected the deceased, a man had been robbed of his 9.5 million on the same day and the same area and it was suspected that the money would have been stolen by the same armed LDU escapee.

The owner of the 9.5 million had also been shot before he was stolen and was rushed to Kilembe Mines hospital where he is currently nursing wounds of gunshots on the right leg.

Visiting the victim in the hospital, Mr Bazirana Blasio narrates how he was intercepted at a petrol station on his way from his coffee stores in Rugendabara to Kasese town who asked for money but before he could say a word he was shot and money was taken.

He adds that the three gunmen were speaking in mixed languages of Luganda and Swahili but he was unable to identify any of them and they moved confidently on foot as he looked on while on the ground.

Police were not in a position to comment as the Regional Police Commander who is said to have been informed about the incident was busy in Meetings the whole day.
