Farmers engaged in the production of apples in Kasese district have decried lack of reliable and sustainable market and transport means for their produce which has continued to undermine the cultivation of the crop.

These now want the government to provide possible solutions for their problems before their efforts are put to waste.

 Kasese district has over three thousand apple farmers who have managed to sustain the crop.

Despite having endured all the maintenance and sustainability costs up to the time of harvest, farmers face soaring transportation costs due to the hilly terrain coupled with the impending threat of a poor market.

According to Kimadi John the Chairperson Kasese Apple growers association, the seemingly promising crop needs efforts in the market and transport sectors.

The Kasese district agricultural officer Mr. Julius Rukara says there is a need to improve the quality of the apples to get a good market.

He added that there is a need to open up a store for apples and make adverse advertisements in a way to create a market.

A team from the NAADs Secretariat visited Kasese to establish how apples are doing in the district and after the assessment, they promised to provide more support to up the game.

The liaison officer from the NAADS secretariat Brig General Geofrey Kigozi assured the apple farmers that the Government will continue supporting them with technical advice so that they can improve on quality apples.
