    Pigs and Pork From Rukungiri banned Over African swine fever Outbreak

    Rukungiri District Veterinary Authorities have banned the movement of pigs and their products because of the reported outbreak of the African swine fever.

     The most affected are Nyakishenyi and Nyarushanje sub counties.  

    Johnson Ninsiima, the Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer told our reporter that his office has already registered 20 cases of African swine fever in Nyarushanje and Nyakishenyi sub counties.

    According to Ninsiima, several pigs in the area are presenting with high fever, depression and loss of appetite, reddening of the skin particularly ears and snout, vomiting and diarrhea.

    Ninsiima says that they are in the process of collecting samples from the affected pigs for examination at the animal laboratory in Entebbe for confirmation. 


    Andrewson Kateebire, the Rukungiri District LC 5 Chairperson has urged pig farmers and pork dealers to abide by the directive to stop the spread of the disease.
