Firearms Registration Exercise Kicks Off

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Police have started registering firearms in Teso region.

The five-day exercise has kicked off at East Kyoga Regional Police office ground in Soroti district. Micheal Odongo, the Police Spokesperson East Kyoga says that it is a National Electronic firearm registration exercise ongoing.

Odongo called upon those holding illegal guns to take the guns for registration to avoid the risk of being arrested.

The Police spokesperson pointed out that the reason for registration of firearms was to curb down crimes in the region.

He also added that they want to know the number of guns which are in the hands of the Army, Police, Prison, Private security and individuals. Odongo stated that they were implementing the president’s directive.

He added that when there is a crime committed somewhere using a gun it will be easy to identify the gun used at the scene if it's registered.

A source that did not want to be named told Salt Radio that some people in Teso are holding illegal guns and he wonders how they are going to take them for verification because they acquired them during the LRA insurgency in Teso.
